Oh Look, Krill!

Oh don't worry. Whales don't eat clownfish, they eat krill.

My LoTR Obession. Passion. Life. (Pt 2)

Back in 2006, I did a post on my obsession for Lord of The Rings. In the past few weeks, I’ve rediscovered the my love for it when I was listening to a Blind Guardian‘s song:

It made realise that I had yet to read The Hobbit in its entirety or even start on The Silmarillion. So re-started the urge for me to delve into Tolkien’s work again.

It took me two weeks or so to finish The Hobbit because I could only get time to read it while I was commuting to and from work. It wasn’t as dull, dry and uninteresting as I had originally thought. Although, that could be due to already having read The Lord of The Rings and experiencing the convoluted and complex way of Tolkien’s wording. I still had a some trouble reading the story because at some parts, my mind would start to wonder and I had to re-read that paragraph(s) again just understand what the words that I was reading actually meant.

In The Hobbit I found out where Sting and Glamdring, Bilbo’s and Gandalf’s swords, respectively, came from. We get to see how Bilbo discovered his love for adventure and how Bilbo and Gandalf became friends. Most importantly of all, I discovered how the One Ring came into Bilbo’s possession. The Lord of The Rings made more sense to me after I read The Hobbit.

Once I completed The Hobbit I moved on to The Silmarillion (that is, after reading a romance novel to prevent Middle-Earth overload). I found that this book was not only harder to read but also dry and very draggy. That was, until Morgoth came to steal the Silmarils. After that, it was almost back to back action, love, tragedy, betrayal and treachery all the way.

I’m actually still not done with the book but so far, it’s been great. Even though it got really confusing after all the name changes for almost all the characters, I enjoyed reading it. I loved that the book gave a history of Middle-Earth, albeit that some parts may not mash entirely with the LoTR books. I’ve got a little bit left of the book to read but I’m very sure that I’ll go on to read The Lord of The Rings (after another romance novel, of course) just so that I can get the almost complete picture of the story.

Now, I really, really want to get all of the Tolkien books. Talk about obsession huh?

Has Anyone Ever Told You How Confusing The Silmarillion is?

Seriously, it’s hard to keep track of all the characters. I’m not even a quarter way through the book and not only are there about at least twenty characters, they have multiple names, and the names are very similar too. I kept having to refer to the genealogy tree at the index pages, just to keep track of the main players.

I’ve been reading it at a relatively slow pace since I only read during my commute to and from work. On top of that, I kept having to re-read passages because I didn’t know where I stopped. I wonder where my bookmark went to. At least with this, I wouldn’t find it so hard to figure out where I stopped. Though the last time I used it, it took too long for me to put in the bookmark at the correct line and that it kept sliding off the page that I started using it as a page marker instead of a line marker.

So far in the book, I’ve reached the part where the Silmarils have been stolen and the chase is on to get them back. Ok, so I haven’t really gotten too far into the book but I think that Fëanor is a pompous prick. Just because he’s the fairest and most skillful of the Elves, doesn’t mean that he is the best, but hey, what do I know. I’m just a fan girl, not a Tolkien scholar. Although, having an advanced degree in all things Middle-Earth may actually be cool but then, I supposed other plebeians might think you’re strange.

Anyway, I’m a fan of collecting series, so reading LoTR, The Hobbit and The Silmarillion makes me want to go out and get all of the Tolkien books. It’s a little obsessive I know but I’m going to start small. Maybe one Tolkien book a year or something. I’d love to get the full set but to get it all in the same cover might just be too difficult to do. We’ll just see now, won’t we?

I guess you might be wondering what the hell I’m doing here, writing at one in the morning when I’m usually asleep at this time. I’ve had one too many sugared drinks (a cup of Milo, a cappuccino and three cups of tea) today and even though I’m tired and a little sleepy, I still don’t really feel like going to bed. Hence the reason I’m here writing about The Silmarillion. Though I guess I have to go to bed soon since I need to go into the office tomorrow morning.

So until the next update….

Awesomely Delicious Battles Fought In Lord Of The Rings

It’s not a secret that my obsession love for Lord of The Rings is without bounds. How ever these people take it to new heights. The built a scale model of Battle at Helms Deep and the Battle of Pelenor Fields. In candy!

So, the next time I put on the DVD for the nth time, just shut up and think of what these people did. Can you imagine if I created something like this in this tropical weather? Be thankful that I’m only hogging the TV and not creating a monstrous ant bait in the living room.
