Oh Look, Krill!

Oh don't worry. Whales don't eat clownfish, they eat krill.

Has Anyone Ever Told You How Confusing The Silmarillion is?

Seriously, it’s hard to keep track of all the characters. I’m not even a quarter way through the book and not only are there about at least twenty characters, they have multiple names, and the names are very similar too. I kept having to refer to the genealogy tree at the index pages, just to keep track of the main players.

I’ve been reading it at a relatively slow pace since I only read during my commute to and from work. On top of that, I kept having to re-read passages because I didn’t know where I stopped. I wonder where my bookmark went to. At least with this, I wouldn’t find it so hard to figure out where I stopped. Though the last time I used it, it took too long for me to put in the bookmark at the correct line and that it kept sliding off the page that I started using it as a page marker instead of a line marker.

So far in the book, I’ve reached the part where the Silmarils have been stolen and the chase is on to get them back. Ok, so I haven’t really gotten too far into the book but I think that Fëanor is a pompous prick. Just because he’s the fairest and most skillful of the Elves, doesn’t mean that he is the best, but hey, what do I know. I’m just a fan girl, not a Tolkien scholar. Although, having an advanced degree in all things Middle-Earth may actually be cool but then, I supposed other plebeians might think you’re strange.

Anyway, I’m a fan of collecting series, so reading LoTR, The Hobbit and The Silmarillion makes me want to go out and get all of the Tolkien books. It’s a little obsessive I know but I’m going to start small. Maybe one Tolkien book a year or something. I’d love to get the full set but to get it all in the same cover might just be too difficult to do. We’ll just see now, won’t we?

I guess you might be wondering what the hell I’m doing here, writing at one in the morning when I’m usually asleep at this time. I’ve had one too many sugared drinks (a cup of Milo, a cappuccino and three cups of tea) today and even though I’m tired and a little sleepy, I still don’t really feel like going to bed. Hence the reason I’m here writing about The Silmarillion. Though I guess I have to go to bed soon since I need to go into the office tomorrow morning.

So until the next update….

  1. Mintea – I totally LOVE the new look!!! But your text is just a hair small for us old folk- aside from that, your new theme is awesome!

  2. @Petra: Thanks for the feedback. I’ll see if I can figure out how to twiddle with the font to make it larger. Actually, I find my font a little hard to read too sometimes. 😀

  3. I admire you for sticking with the Silmarillion. I keep wanting to attack it, but every time I pick up that book, I instantly feel tired. Not sleepy…just tired.
